I think I am exactly that Observe. When I reinstalled X3TC some, what; two months back, I could hardly steer the ship - not to mention how to mod. First thing I did was attack the HUD I think - it is too cluttered in the original, so I did a hash and slash job. Still haven't really finished/polished it - and that is an other typical thing for me, I get into a gazillion projects and get to the finish in very few. I would say none, but that is not true - it only takes a very looooooong time :calm:

Hi guys,

Just wanted to ask a question.

What is the best software to edit/create Mission Director files?

I created some game starts using a combination XML Notepad & Notepad++.
If there is something better I would really like to know about it.

Thanks

Hello TEKing66,

The "best software" depends somewhat on what you are used to using. Personally, I use Microsoft Visual Studio because that's what I use in my professional work as a programmer.

For purposes of Mission Director programming, MS Visual Studio Express (free) is an excellent choice. Other IDE (Integrated Development Environment) applications with XML editing capabiltity can also be used with good result.

Important is to use a program that can read schema files, but I too use VWD Express, its free and does the Job good.

Most important is that you extract the latest director.xsd file from the cats and you edit/create your MD files in same folder.
You then can make use of drop-down menu (ctrl+space) where in most cases a list of choices to specific the node/flag/action/etc. are given to you.
Also marking wrong or faulty code, other than common xml errors and last but not least, most options have a small info tag popping up with a description of what you are typing/choosing from.

MFG

Thanks for the quick answer.

I'll check out MS Visual Studio Express.
Last time I done very much coding was about 20 years ago. Then it was for AutoCAD, the company I was working for wanted to kinda specialize it to suit their needs. So, it might take me a while to kinda catch back up on a few of the concepts. But patience is one thing I seem to have, so I'm going to give this MD stuff a try. And I might (probably will) have many questions. So, if I start to bug you guys, just smack me on the back of the head and tell me to watch and learn.

Thanks again.
